Happy Halloween

Yesterday was a Halloween celebration at work. Pumpkin carving contest for the employees in the morning and a party for the families in the afternoon.

Here I am with Andrea, Rondi and my boss. A fun but busy day.

On the health front, I ended up going to an Urgent Care facility after leaving work and have been diagnosed with a sinus infection. No wonder this darn headcold wasn't going away! I think this is the first time I've had a sinus infection and I've got a huge headache, along with pain in the nerves on the top molars, so much that I can't eat anything hard. It's crazy! Here's hoping the antibiotics kick in soon!!!

Mom, I need a costume......

So K let's me know on Sunday that he needs to be a Native American for his role in the Haunted House at school... Does he think I can just pull this stuff out of my sewing basket?

The first idea was to just go with a brown t-shirt and embellish it with fringe, but then I started looking at costume ideas online, went to the fabric store, and just decided I would make the darn thing. It would look so much better and maybe he would get some use out of it in the future. And I was kinda happy to be able to make him a costume again - I think the last one was some Star Wars outfit about three years ago.

So here's what I came up with in two nights. He'll wear tan jeans for the pants.

All that fringe cutting took forever! But it was all in the name of good crafting... and for my little boy.

Hopefully, I can get a picture of him in full regalia as he will be working at the Haunted House for the next three nights.

It has now been one week since this headcold came on. Bleh. I guess I feel lucky that it has only stayed in my head instead of meandering down into my chest/body. I am now at the point where it needs to be gone. I haven't been able to taste food for the past couple of days, but then again I haven't had much of an appetite. Work hasn't been crazy, but enough needing to be taken care of that I have come in for a few hours every day.

But J and K have been taking good care of me. :0)

A Jam-Packed Weekend - Scrapbook Expo and Quilt Expo

This was truly a marathon weekend (ok, well, it was two weekends ago)! I got to spend two very long days with a few of my dear friends.

Saturday was the Sacramento Scrapbook Expo at the Sacramento Convention Center. Rocio and I headed up to meet up with Rhonda to do some shopping and cropping, and catching up. We left Rocio's house at around 12noon and got back around 1:30a.

I can't say I got very much completed at the crop, but I was mostly there to hang-out with my girls anyway. The cruise up in Rocio's brother's lowrider truck and the 'OMG, it's not Sunday, it's Saturday and we didn't feed the parking meter' excitement made for a terrific day! Thanks for driving, Rocio, and sorry I fell asleep on the way home!!!

On Sunday, Debbie and I headed to the Pacific International Quilt Festival at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Wow.

We attended our first quilt/sewing expo a couple of months ago and were pleased, but O.M.G. this was incredible!

Not only was the sheer floor space of the entire event humongous, but the level of artistry that these artists achieve was nothing short of mind-blowing.

These pictures don't do the works justice, but it is just a sample of what we saw.

This one was a group effort where each panel was done by a different member. The only constant needed to be the horizon line. The detail work in each of these is something that needs to be seen in person to be truly appreciated.

An overall show prize winner. It was based on a photo that the artist's daughter took from her apartment window in Hong Kong. A study on perspectives.

Check-out the 3-D work. Nearly all of the roofs had 3-D pieces to them. Clearly not one for the top of a bed!

And then to bring it home. Another group effort. Amazing! With my love of victorian houses, I was floored with this one.

Six and a half hours there and we were spent. So many incredible works, but there was a point where we just couldn't focus on each individual one anymore!

Debbie and I was both very inspired to see sewing at this level. I think Debbie may be brushing that dust off of her sewing machine very soon! I've already signed up for two classes at a local quilt shop since I've only quilted by-the-books. I'm excited to learn more about the art of quilting and see what I can create myself!

It was a terrific weekend and I loved having the opportunities to spend time with my friends! I could have done without the headcold that came on on Monday night following, though!!

How I Spent My Weekend - or What Was I Thinking

Condor Classic, San Juan Bautista, CA

I don't know what I was thinking. I agreed to do ANOTHER ride event only two weeks after the last one. Ok, I was feeling really strong after the Lighthouse ride, but given the circumstances of having skipped riding last weekend because I thought I was coming down with something... not a good idea. Thanks goodness we ended up deciding to take it easy and only do the 40 miler.

The scenery was beautiful...

And the mission itself, San Juan Bautista is always beautiful.

But, it is probably not a ride I would do again because the roads were crazy bad from farming vehicles and trucks constantly driving over them, and the headwinds that kicked up on the return ride out in the vastness of the flat farmlands were brutal. Well, they were for me - J didn't seem to think so, ummm, whatever. And we had to park in a field with dirt clods and hay and trop through it pushing our bikes - thank goodness we have cleat covers!

But we finished.

Thank goodness. Only 60 miles left to go in my annual 1k goal...

My son is the coolest

For so many reasons, but the reason this time is that he has started taking gymnastics. Yup. Not at his mother's urging - nope. At his own request.

That's him in the middle of the pic in motion on the long trampoline ready to do a running flip. Although he's only been there maybe four times, he's doing great. A little sore after each class from muscles he's not used to using, but that's a good thing!

Here he is attempting to do handstand on a cushioned balance beam. Sometimes the outcomes can be pretty comical since he's not quite as limber as the rest of them, but he's a good sport about it all.

The best part of it all is that he is in a gym with probably 25-30 girls ranging in ages 5-15 (three simultaneous classes),

he's the only boy (aside from the instructor), and

he doesn't care.

That is why he is the coolest. He will try new things and not worry how he fits in to the group or the stereotype of that group. I'm sure some of the girls, and the parents find it odd that this 5'10" young man would be there in the gym with all those girls, but I think he's actually pretty smart.

It helps him with an opening to talk to cheerleeders. ;0)

Lighthouse Century - San Luis Obispo, CA

Oh my, I didn't realize how long it had been since I last posted! Life has been a little hectic trying to get settled in the new job. I'm hoping the toughtest part of it is over.

Anyhoo, the ride was great and we all had a terrific time. Michelle and I completed the Flat Metric (I think it came to about 58 miles) in just over four hours and J and Sharon came in from completing the Flat Century a short while after us. J had tire and wheel issues, but fortunately there was a terrific bike mechanic at the rest stop to help him out. Knock on wood, Michelle and I made it through pretty smoothly.

Before the ride pics. The ride started out at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.

Pics from our lunch stop right at the beach. The course for us was up and back on Highway 1. The scenery was beautiful and the microclimates were in full force! In the morning, we started out in crisp but cool weather, then hit the fog and got a little wet. Later in the afternoon on the way back, it was pretty cool with the sea breeze, but then we would his a section around Paso Robles that was CRAZY hot, then all of a sudden it would be cool again! Thank goodness, though, as we would have struggled if the entire ride would have been in the heat. Paso Robles hit something like 104 that day.

And then the happy post-ride pic!

Oh, and the celebratory dinner that evening was, of course, at the Cracked Crab in Pismo. YUM!!! The food sectioned off at the bottom of the picture protected by the two lower water glasses was the pot for J and I. Look at all that crabby goodness!

This ride put me at a total of 900 miles for this year so far. Only 100 more to go!

52 miles and 1330 feet

Another day of riding - it was hot! Next weekend is the Lighthouse Century ride that I'll be doing with J, Michelle and Sharon. Well, that would be 'doing with' in the loose sense in that J and Sharon will be doing one of the harder routes and Michelle and I will ride the flat metric century.

Really cool medieval looking home

Palace at Versaille... in Los Altos. The door is too shadowed, but it was this elaborate ironwork that covered the ENTIRE entrance. I'm speechless from the excess? gaudiness? Just speechless. It was just bizarre to see such a home being built in this location, in this economy...

And finally, I got to ride over the relatively new bike/pedestrian bridge that crosses over Hwy 280. It is a really pretty bridge and gives a great birds-eye view of the highway.

It was a really busy weekend and its off to work tomorrow!

Red and Aqua complete

Call me an overachiever (these aren't due until Nov 2), but I finished off these squares for my first swap! 25 squares cut into fourths = 100 squares done. All the fabrics were from Joann's selection of fat quarters.

Work in progress - I'm not yet sure how I want to quilt it. So far I've stiched up three quilt tops from the Fall 2009 edition of 'Easy Quilts' magazine. This one is called 'Split Pea Soup'.

And finally, a playmat I've made for my baby niece. (Pattern from onegirl's Etsy store.) I'm hoping this will get out in the mail in at least the next week or so!

So much sewing to do and so little time in a day!

Red and Aqua

'Wow, Mom, you're a Ninja'

Because this is what we had to traverse for about half-a-mile to get to this spot. And I had to display some ninja-like moves to get there.

We spent a beautiful day fishing at the coast today. Well, they fished, I took pictures and I watched.

A few things were caught, but none were kept.

But it was a beautiful day to be gone fishing.

50 miles - 2500' - 4 hrs

Who does that?

Me, on my bike, yesterday.

If anyone was to ever ask me, 'Hey, how would you like to ride a bike for four hours to go 50 miles while climbing 2500' feet?', my response would be absolutely be 'Umm, right.'

But for some reason, I choose to do this, getting on my bike once a weekend most weekends, and actually enjoy it. Yes, even the climbing (riding uphill).

This was a particularly long ride; some rides are harder than others, especially for someone who is a weekend rider - no mid-week rides for me. And it can be nerve-wracking when you have some jerk in a car/truck/motorcycle whiz by you without slowing down their speed or bothering to slide over even just a tad.

But there is a terrific sense of accomplishment in doing that kind of mileage
in that amount of time,
powered by my own energy.

Pretty cool.
